It was hardly a surprise, but Final Fantasy VII Remake dominated the physical UK chart last week. With new releases slowing down, we were expecting it to top the latest chart as well, but alas, it's been bested by some old favourites. FIFA 20 takes the top spot this time, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is in third place, meaning Cloud and the gang must settle for fourth.
It's not the only new title on a downward trend; Resident Evil 3 has also moved lower in the top 10, now in eighth position. Still, it's not all bad news. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has been enjoying a resurgence, moving up the bestsellers each week. It's now in fifth place, just ahead of the ever-present Grand Theft Auto V. Oh, and in case you're wondering -- The Last of Us Remastered has vanished from the chart just as quickly as it reappeared, not even landing in the top 40.
Here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 18th April 2020
- FIFA 20
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Final Fantasy VII Remake
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Resident Evil 3
- Luigi's Mansion 3
- Ring Fit Adventure

Well it's Cod and FIFA and the sheep will always keep them selling
Itβs amazing how such generic fodder beats the amazing game that is final fantasy 7 remake !! But than again people keep buying the sorry excuse for a game that is FIFA xD
Blah blah COD blah blah sheeple wake up blah blah just let people buy what they want smh
Lockdown = lots buying fifa (as no actual football on).
CoD will also see increased sales as a result of more people wanting a game to play online atm i guess?
Also physical copies of FF7 remake are almost impossible to come by after the initial run.
Disappointed in the UK that Persona 5 Royal isnt in the top 10
This never ceases to depress me.
It's upsetting that some quality titles don't stand up against the same old Call Of Duty and FIFA games.
Those titles pretty much represent everything I avoid in gaming. I get that football is popular in the UK, and that also COD is the go to version of a shooter game, but it's also representative of the large proportion of people who don't really game, or typically have a PS4 with either one of these games (or both installed) and literally nothing else.
It doesn't represent gaming at all, just because it's appeals to the biggest demographic, as I would never consider probably at least 70-80% of these players gamers (I'm likely sure they wouldn't either)
Ok, so here's the thing. These COD/Fifa gamers aren't hurting anyone. They're just helping the video game industry, because if it weren't for these games, these people wouldn't even buy a console or any video games in the first place.
Gotta say tho, Modern Warfare IS a great game - the campaign, the multiplayer and Warzone is fantastic. Polished to perfection. And I'm generally a JRPG player !
Star Wars, still strong in the force it is.
@naruball Financially, couldn't agree with you more. All it really shows though, is that the gaming market is overblown when it comes to actual popularity.
Like I said, people buy these games, but rarely play them. I know some of my colleagues at work being excellent examples. They all talk about it when the latest COD or FIFA comes out, they're super excited, they they rush out and grab it when it's launched, along with a console if necessary, play it for 10 days, then their console gathers dust for a whole year, till th next version is released.
Whilst i respect this is what moves units, and keeps the company financially stable, it doesn't do much for the actual gaming community as a whole.
@FullbringIchigo people like what they like.
@Rob_230 persona 5 royal is the best game I played this year so far ! Amazing
@Grindagger yup. I know exactly what you mean. One of my best friends bought a ps4 for Fifa and that's all he plays. And I know others who get the latest COD and hardly ever play it.
It's definitely overblown in terms of actual popularity, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. Just like (most) mobile games or wii shovelware, we can completely ignore them and focus on the rest of the games, instead of getting angry at their popularity.
I think Final Fantasy is sold out at a lot of places which wonβt be helping its chart position.
Also, Modern Warfare is great!
@eumenes yeah that's true but you have to admit thete are some who only play cod or fifa games nothing else
I work with a guy who only plays fifa, that's it
Nice, it would have probably sold more if it wasn't for the virus, but it'll probably sell more along the way rather than all at once.
@FullbringIchigo same here, everyone I know only plays Fifa and Cod, It's why I come on this site to talk to others that are passionate about all game genre's. My wife isn't a gamer but I've seen her get caught up in the games I play that are narrative driven, she even goes as far to ask what's happening and why!
Remember there is more brain dead people, than those who have the intelligence or patience to play and rpg.
Let people buy or play what they want. FFVII remake will still sell plenty of copies and make a huge profit.
Ive got a mate who always keeps trying to get me to but both COD and FIFA and i always tell him id rather sell my PS4 than play either.
The only time i would worry is when companies like Atlus, Square, FromSoftware, Platinum etc sit back and say "look at our sales figures compared to FIFA and COD, people obvioustly dont like our games that much in the west" not that that would ever happen so no reason for me to be concerned. I know what i like to play and what developers i trust to make an awsome game. Other folk can buy what they want π
@Hobbesyall i have just literally started P5R about an hour ago. A bit Final Fantasied out after completing it so mixing it up a bit.
@Hobbesyall most gamers, sadly, are your lowest common denominator. 2k this, CoD that and wash, rinse, repeat. I mean we need those " i only play" X game type gamers to allow publishers to fund other projects but it can still be a little disheartening. I'm not knocking the people that bought their console to just play madden- just saying there are a lot of them
You're a sad story if FIFA or COD fans bother you. Come to think of it I haven't played my FIFA20 in a loooong time, blame it on RDR2 amd other games.
There's a lot of judgment in this comment section, but I imagine a lot of you probably only really go to the theaters to watch Marvel films (well, when people were leaving their homes, anyway), or only buy new novels from one or two really big, mainstream authors, or only follow a handful of utterly mainstream musicians/bands, and so on. That doesn't make you someone with bad taste, it just means that, if something isn't a primary hobby for you, you're unlikely to experiment with smaller or less mainstream titles. And while the FF brand is huge in the hardcore gaming community, most people don't know or care about it outside of that bubble. And that's alright. The game is still selling really well.
Being able to play a FIFA match with my Family or co-workers I have not seen in weeks and chat for a bit is fantastic.
Same as with Madden and F1
One game sells well and it is proof "it is good". Week later another game sells well and it is proof "of sheep" ππ
Reality is, "there is something for everyone"
@naruball to be honest the problem isn't the games per se or the people playing them, @Ralizah explained it nicely and I totally agree with them.
The problem is that these games, which are the most popular, also employ the most predatory monetary tactics to unsuspecting customers who don't know any better, because, as said, they're not that interested in the medium as a whole to keep themselves informed on forums, sites, etc. like we do.
And that is perfectly fine in and of itself, not everyone has to be passionate about gaming, but the issue arises when these people grow so accustomed to games being predatory it becomes second nature. If you ask an "average" PS4 owner about their stance on microtransactions, they probably won't know what they are or they'll just take them for granted as part of the game.
I know because I've tried to explain the "evil" of this practices to non-passionate friends who really only play FIFA and/or Fortnite.
On this topic, if you're interested, I highly recommend Folding Ideas' YT video called "Manufactured Discontent"; it focuses on Fortnite but explains a lot of nuances about this stuff.
@clvr Thanks for the recommendation, I'll watch it.
@naruball you're welcome! π
That's a shame. Even Animal Crossing only dropped to 2nd or third I think. Always the same series of games that just keep selling. Who (that actually want them) doesn't own Fifa 20 or GtA V by now?! I mean, I like the latter game but wow, it's been out for ages now. Maybe it's because people keep buying it that EA get away with sending event notifications for that damn trash after it's deleted off your system. It literally won't go away like a computer virus. Only reason I had it in my PS4 was because my friend wanted to play Vault Football, which is a garbage version of the actual good games of the series, Fifa Street. I'd rather play with ny own butthole than have a solo session of Fifa 20 tbh.
Absolute kudos to gta 5 for holding in there for so long. Star wars was good, currently playing ff7 and enjoying it but man o man fifa haha ehhh!! Guess there's less gamers in the UK than I thought
@Craigsouthern FIFA is massive in most countries. Wherever football is popular. It's so popular here that's it's totally normal to pretend to like it when you're at school as people will think there's something wrong with you if you don't. It's like going to church in the Bible Belt in the 1950s (or even nowadays probably). No idea why so many people are so keen on seeing which set of 11 millionaires can kick a sphere into some string more often, but there we go.
Hahaha I'm 39 yrs old, and not ashamed to play final fantasy and many jrpgs while my mates play fifa, however when my wife walks in the dining room and I'm collecting herbs and playing games with Japanese girls on them she rolls her eyes and says I've got problems (I haven't just love a grind to get them stats up) haha
@Kidfunkadelic83 You finally completed a Jrpg then?!
@Jayofmaya ππππi did. I believe out of the countless i own that this is my first one ever. I also completed links awakening on switch yesterday. Its not just JRPG's i dont usually get through. Its games in general π. I seem to be doing well at the moment.
It took the hit partly because the game is sold out or Β£50-55 everywhere. Most people wanting to buy now probably wont spend Β£50-55 on it. Even shopto and base are charging silly prices.
My mate cant get a copy at a sensible price!
I rent personally so got it day one, as well as doom eternal, resident evil 3 and also Octopath traveler. All for Β£22 a month (3disc at once)
@Kidfunkadelic83 Ahhh, I'm kind of the opposite. It's only recently with the N. Sane Trilogy (the first game is just too hard) I've accepted that I'm not going to 100% every game, for the first time in a long time. My back log is so massive at this point that I don't really have to get any new games for a while haha
